This artwork explores Singapore’s shophouse architecture from 1900-1940, the Chinese Baroque or Eclectic style. Characterised by lavish ornaments, bright colours, and fusion of classical elements with Chinese symbolism, these shophouses—on Amoy Street, Bukit Pasoh, Emerald Hill, and Tanjong Katong—tell stories of cultural exchange.
Using bold colours and intricate textures, I’ve recreated their grandeur, blending Western and Eastern influences. This piece tributes the Chinese Baroque style, preserving its elegance and symbolism for future generations while adding joy and vibrancy through colour and form.
