Durians are commonly linked with Southeast Asian cuisine. particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Although only one type is marketed globally, there are numerous species of the Durian tree enjoyed across different regions, each with its distinct taste. Fans of Durian often describe flavors such as cheese, almonds, garlic, caramel, sometimes experiencing them all at once! Given its unique characteristics and strong scent, you might hesitate to try it.
However, as a local resident, most of my friends enjoy Durian, so I decided to give it a chance. “The first time, it wasn’t as bad,” I was surprised not to be repulsed, except for the lingering bitter aftertaste. On another occasion, I was treated to a delightful Durian tasting by my friends, featuring three varieties: bitter, creamy, and sweet. Savoring Durian suddenly felt like a special occasion; I relished the full tasting experience and felt fortunate to be able to enjoy this delicious fruit. I even found a favorite among them, the creamy one.
When I created my art piece “Durian,” I aimed to capture the fruit’s
texture through relief painting and chose golden leaves to represent its strong flavor. The flower added a touch of sweetness and elegance, highlighting the fruit’s notoriety and the folklore surrounding it.
